Who am I? I am a professional astronomer living in the Bay Area of California. I was born in Paterson, New Jersey but spent most of my life growing up in Florida. My ancestry is predominantly Dutch, as is my name (pronounced dee-BYE-zur...Yes, I know is not a proper Dutch pronunciation, nor should the D be capitalized...but that was the name that was given to me!).
As an ex-musician, I enjoy listening to almost all forms of music (just no country-western, please). My musical taste is so broad, I have actually been known to put a Stevie Wonder song on the same mixed-CD as Korn. And, who says you can't put Erasure on the same CD as Cannonball Adderly? I have also been known to occasionally dust off my saxophone just to see if it still works (which it does!), and I marvel at the strange noises it makes now.
Since I am extremely tall, I am almost required by the federal laws of every country (except Yemen) to play basketball...which I quite enjoy. Shaquille O'Neal and I were born on the same day of the same year, you know. He makes $26 million a year. I don't. What the hell was my high school guidance counselor thinking?!? Thanks for NOTHING, Mr. Derrick!
I am also a huge fan of U.S. pop-culture. It is something appreciated once you live in another country for a while. I also feel there are not many moments in life that cannot be expressed by movie quotes...which I do constantly, much to the dismay of my friends, most of whom have NEVER seen half the movies I quote from.
I also enjoy reading; mostly science fiction and fantasy books. Though, I do read a lot of non-fiction. I especially love books on archeology, philosophy, and religion ("Don't you find secular humanism yummy?*"). Of course, finding the time to read for pleasure can be difficult since my job requires a lot of reading to keep up with the newest developments in my field.
My hobbies also include photography, so don't forget to check out the Pictures link! (Although, these are mostly travel log pictures.)
* From the movie Bedazzled (2000).
