Dr. James Michael De Buizer
SOFIA Manager for Science Operations &
USRA Senior Scientist
PhD in Astronomy, University of Florida, 2000

About

James De Buizer is a professional astronomer and aeronaut. He currently works for the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), which is a NASA project utilizing a heavily modified Boeing 747SP aircraft fitted with a 2.7-meter telescope that flies at high altitude to conduct astronomical research. He holds the position of Manager for Science Operations for SOFIA, and is also a Senior Scientist for the Universities Space Research Association. James has published research in several areas of observational astronomy and astrophysics from objects in our solar system to distant galaxies, though the formation of high mass stars is his field of expertise. He also has extensive experience with infrared astronomical instrumentation. During his tenure working on NASA's SOFIA project he has flown on-board over 50 missions as Flight Science Director.

The above links are to general audience press releases and web features about James' research projects. Though many get picked up by different media sources (e.g. Forbes, CNN), links to articles on those media outlets generally break after a few months. However, the orginal press articles are generally archived by the issuing organizations, so those more stable links are provided here when possible.
